Selkirk College made the decision to switch to Lyryx Open Text for our Introduction to Financial Accounting course this year. Reason: it’s a free download or a very low-priced hard copy. School fees keep mounting for students and we want to help out any way we can. It’s a lot of work for an instructor to switch texts, but worth the effort.
I have been especially pleased with the new Lyryx Open Text for this course. With all the solutions available on the free download version, it has saved me time. I don’t have to post solutions after each class, as the students can look them up themselves. The PowerPoint slides have been very clear and helpful. I’ve found that there are more slides than I actually need. It’s easy to skip the “extras” and go right to the ones I find most useful, that I can speak to. As always, the Lyryx assignments are a wonderful tool for helping the students to really learn the concepts from class. The instant feedback and ability to repeat questions is extremely helpful. I have had great support from the Lyryx Learning team. I know there’s a group of people working on my behalf to make this transition to a new text as smooth as possible.

We were seeking a very customized text for an Economics course for business students. Lyryx and authors worked together to create a text based on the course outline, which included removing and adding content, reorganization, and adjustments for continuity.
This level of customization has not been available to us before and we are very pleased with the outcome as well as the option to make further changes if desired.
Beyond that, we found the Lyryx online assessment to be quite beneficial for our students. While no statistical analysis was conducted we found student engagement with the subject matter was increased substantially.

I would absolutely recommend Lyryx to any instructor or professor looking to encourage students to practice the material for their course more! I have made the Lyryx component of my class a part of students’ grades. Here is the great thing about Lyryx – each time a student does a lab the data set is new / different. It is not just an exact repeat of the previous version of the lab. Every student and every lab is unique. This has students to work through the question again (same concepts, new data). Using Lyryx in my Statistics class for many years has absolutely benefited my students; increased grades in what is typically considered a hard class for many students and has increased overall engagement in the course!

I would highly recommend LYRYX for any educator who wants to use a mastery type learning approach to accounting, who has diverse student learning needs, and/or who had limited instructional time in the classroom. With Lyryx, students have the option of using a free electronic textbook which they can read on their computers, or they can buy a print version at a moderate price.

Lyryx was easy to navigate and I really liked how it marked questions right away – showing exactly what you got wrong and step-by-step solutions. ACCT 253 is Athabasca’s highest enrollment course and it uses excellent interactive materials with an OER textbook – infinitely better than publisher supplements. I would highly recommend Lyryx materials for similar subjects if they are as good as the accounting interactive products.
