San Diego, CA (November 9-12, 2017) Last week, Lyryx headed south for the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges Annual Conference. Mathematics educators from all over the US (and some Canadians!) attended to “Have a Prime Time” and learn more about developments in the instruction of mathematics.

For Lyryx, it was an opportunity to meet with a plethora of instructors seeking adaptable, accessible and affordable resources for their courses. There were a lot of (happily) surprised faces, when visitors to our booth learned of the open (free) textbooks Lyryx develops and posts on their website. Eyes and smiles grew even larger when we told them about the freely available in LaTeX files and that online formative assessment (homework) is uniquely affordable for students at $0-$39.95!

We are very grateful to the AMATYC for organizing such an expansive conference and we look forward to attending again next year.

Lyryx reports substantial savings for post-secondary students enrolled in courses using open educational resources (OER).

Calgary, AB (September 12, 2017) Lyryx Learning’s FREE LAB Initiative recently reported $350,000 in savings for students since the Fall of 2014! This unique initiative, pioneered by Lyryx, is available to university and college courses using open texts and Lyryx online assessment. FREE LAB offers students zero-cost access to their homework (online assessment) when accessed via their school’s computer labs.

Claude Laflamme, Founder and CEO of Lyryx Learning, says, “FREE LAB is more than just straightforward savings for students; it permits the combination of open educational resources (OER) with high-quality, rigorously maintained online assessment at truly no cost to students.”

The OER movement continues to gain momentum within the post-secondary education community and is an important part of Students’ Union (SU) initiatives across Canada. Many SUs are actively working to increase awareness and adoption of OER at their institutions to make these substantial cost savings a reality for students.

The Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) commented, “The steady rise of textbook costs in the past decade has reduced accessibility to post-secondary education significantly. The SAMU is a proponent of OERs and recognizes their role in reducing costs and increasing access for students.”

Lyryx is excited to contribute to the increased adoption of OER at post-secondary institutions in Canada by providing resources that are adaptable, accessible and affordable for students.

Chicago, Illinois (July 26-29, 2017) Lyryx was pleased to be an exhibitor at this year’s Mathematical Association of America’s MathFest (https://www.maa.org/meetings/mathfest-2017). Joining thousands of mathematicians in pursuit of the MAA’s mission to “advance the understanding of mathematics and its impact on our world;” Lyryx exhibited their combination of free open texts and affordable high quality online assessment for Calculus and Linear Algebra, otherwise known as Lyryx with Open Texts (LOTs).

Lyryx President and Professor of Mathematics, Claude Laflamme, was invited to speak in the session regarding online assessment. His extensive experience with both developing and using online assessment was of great value to those seeking more information about resources available and their effectiveness.

A wonderful spirit of comradery, both among neighboring exhibitors and attendees, was a highlight of the event. In addition, LOTs for Calculus and Linear Algebra generated significant interest from many attendees and the Lyryx team is excited to follow up with interested parties the coming weeks!

Calgary, AB (March 6, 2017) Lyryx Learning has received an honorable mention as part of the 2017 OE Awards with the Open Education Consortium.  This honorable mention is in recognition of our strengths and initiatives with Open Textbooks.

In response to this recognition Lyryx wants to bring further awareness to the importance of open educational resources (OER) for the future of education. The OER movement will continue to break barriers with innovation and progressive advancement.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Open Education Consortium” says Claude Laflamme, Founder and CEO of Lyryx Learning. “It means a lot to know that a global platform like OEC notices our contribution to advancing learning through open resources and affordable assessments. Thank you OEC.”

The Open Education Consortium is a global network of educational institutions, individuals and organizations that support an approach to education based on openness, including collaboration, innovation and collective development and use of open educational materials. The OE Awards for Excellence have been recognizing innovation in open education resources since 2011.

Calgary, AB (January 19, 2017) – Yesterday Bloomberg reported that Pearson Plc, an education publishing company, had a decrease of 30% in Q4 for their higher education material in the United States. This may indicate that students are recognizing alternatives to the traditional printed textbook. Over the past ten years, prices on textbooks have risen over three times the rate of inflation.

In contrast, Lyryx Learning, a Canadian-owned open educational resources company, saw an increase of 20% in Q4, 2016. Both companies provide course material for higher education. The difference is that Pearson publishes textbooks while Lyryx provides Open Texts and adaptable online educational resources.

“The education world is changing rapidly. Students can’t afford the hyper inflated costs of textbooks,” says Claude Laflamme, Founder and CEO of Lyryx Learning. “Traditional publishers aren’t reacting fast enough to a changing market where everything is online and accessible to all.”

Instructors are also adapting to the students need for change. Deborah Wilson, an instructor at Selkirk College says, “School fees keep mounting for students and we want to help out any way we can.”

Gone are the days of lugging around five expensive textbooks each semester that are never to be used again or sold at a fraction of the original value. Lyryx is innovating and considers students’ best interests when developing products.

These are some of the reasons open educational resources (OER) support students learning:

  • Cost savings
  • Convenience of learning anywhere
  • Texts are open and adaptable
  • Universal access

This is part of a series responding to and expanding on that essay.  “What do you teach?” people ask when you say you are a university professor in Canada.
