Over 100,000 students have registered in Lyryx with Open Texts courses since the Fall of 2013.

Calgary, AB (October 1, 2019) A proud publisher of open educational resources (OER) since 2019, Lyryx Learning has been committed to providing open textbooks and affordable online homework to students in higher education throughout Canada and the United States. Now they are celebrating a major milestone – more than 100,000 students have registered in Lyryx with Open Texts courses!

The OER movement has gained significant momentum in the last decade. Recently, open source textbooks have received partial credit for a 26% decrease in college textbook costs. As part of this movement, Lyryx has published twelve open source textbooks (and ancillary resources) – all of which are accessible to students at no cost and all associated source files are available for instructors to edit. Additionally, as an OpenStax Ally, Lyryx provides online homework for seven of their open textbooks.

Lyryx’s commitment to making education more accessible and affordable is further evidenced with innovations like FREE LAB. Students can access their online homework at no cost in campus computer labs, but can also opt-in to pay an affordable price for the convenience of completing assignments off-campus. Earlier this year, Lyryx announced that FREE LAB has saved students an estimated $600K.

With more than 100,000 students registered and overall savings of over $11 million to date (compared to traditional print textbooks), Lyryx is excited to celebrate this milestone and to continue helping ensure that the momentum of the OER movement won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Lyryx updates the total savings for post-secondary students enrolled in courses using open educational resources (OER) with FREE LAB option.

Calgary, AB (May 9, 2019) Lyryx is very proud to be a member of the OER community and takes its role as a contributor very seriously. Working to strengthen OER by employing a sustainable financial model for the development and ongoing improvement of quality open material in the subjects of Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics, Lyryx receives no funding from governments, foundations or institutions.

In addition to their open (free) textbooks, Lyryx is pleased to offer its already affordable online homework at NO COST to students in campus computer labs – an initiative called FREE LAB. As of today, FREE LAB has provided free access to thousands of students in Canada and the United States, with savings estimated at over $600K. Claude Laflamme, Founder and CEO of Lyryx Learning, is pleased to say that, “While our products are already affordable and have saved students over $9M in the past four years, we can further offer free access as an option to all students, which is particularly valuable to those in financial need.”

Moreover, in contrast to the ‘inclusive access’ model currently being marketed by large publishers forcing students to opt-out after being enrolled without their consent, and often leaving them without some necessary course materials; FREE LAB is a flipped model that puts course materials in students’ hands upfront at no cost and allows students to opt-in at affordable price for the convenience of accessing materials off-campus. As such, the students decide whether it is worth the cost, and Lyryx believes students have a right to make those decisions!

Lyryx believes the OER movement is playing a key role in forcing these new publishing models, and is delighted to see high-quality OERs increasing accessibility and decreasing unnecessary costs to students.

Calgary, AB (March 18, 2019) On March 8, 2019, Lyryx announced its inaugural Lyryx OER Champion of the year; Dr. Tilly Jensen of Athabasca University. For her exemplary work within the OER community, the Faculty of Business, where Dr. Jensen is an Assistant Professor, received an award of $1,500 to further OER practice.

The Lyryx OER Champion campaign was created to celebrate the efforts and successes of instructors working to adopt, adapt and develop open educational resources (OERs) in conjunction with Lyryx. Running from January to March of 2019, an OER Champion was selected every other week, with their story showcased on the Lyryx website and social media. Upon selecting four OER Champions, Lyryx authors followed specific guidelines in collectively voting for the Lyryx OER Champion of the Year. Below is Dr. Jensen’s story, as submitted by Suzanne Kyle:

“Currently, all three of Tilly’s courses have OERs in place and are actively running. Tilly has worked diligently with the province and all other stakeholders, first to secure the level of funding needed, without which the OERs would never have been written. Second, she also provided countless hours of mentoring to the OER authors, and to other Athabasca University staff. Since Tilly is a respected and experienced author herself, she was in a unique position to take the lead for these OERs, to liaise with all the stakeholders, including Department of Education, and take this process from funding acquisition, to production to rollout for all three of her 3rd-level university courses. During that time, she took the lead to navigate the many roadblocks and to resolve the myriad of issues arising throughout the OER process so that the OER project would reach fruition, which they have. This took a lot of effort in addition to her other duties with Athabasca University. One last and very important point, Tilly is a staunch supporter and is truly passionate about the creation of OERs and three newly created OERs to add to the OER community is proof of that passion.”

Follow up with Lyryx in January 2020 when the OER Champion campaign will celebrate another round of OER advocates. See all Lyryx OER Champion stories here.

Calgary, AB (February 5, 2019) As awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) grows, instructors are turning to Lyryx Learning as a full service publisher to provide both free open source textbooks along with corresponding affordable online homework. Most importantly, students benefit from the lower costs, as Lyryx has helped students save almost $9M over the past five years.

All Lyryx texts have an open license and are distributed to students at no cost. Instructors can also obtain the source files for the text, which they can edit as they wish. The cost of the online homework ranges from $40-$60 for the first course, and is reduced to $20 for any subsequent course. For those adopting the Lyryx online homework, the editorial and support teams are available daily to adapt the content to the particular course, and to provide assistance to instructors and students throughout the course.

Since 2015, Lyryx has also offered FREE access on campus which allows students to access all their course material at no cost in designated computer labs. This option, which has resulted in almost $500K savings for students over these past three years, is particularly valuable for students with financial needs and harkens back to the traditional campus library policy that provided reserve copies of course material for use in that location.

As a Canadian leader in the global OER movement, the goal of Lyryx Learning is not only to provide substantial cost savings for students, but also to provide instructors and students with high quality content, rigorously maintained online homework, editorial services, and prompt, effective support services.

Calgary, AB (September 4, 2018) Over the summer we have been improving our online homework platform to enhance accessibility to students with visual impairments, make it easier to enter answers using only a keyboard, as well as improve use on devices with a small screen.

In our efforts to improve accessibility, we have made a number of changes to our platform. Now, web pages and homework questions can be read with screen reader software in all major web browsers (see more). Also, a “high contrast” mode has been added for questions, making for improved reading of the question and feedback for those with limited vision and color blindness (see more). Further, web pages can be navigated and response to questions entered using only a keyboard (see more). We are pleased to report that these changes have made the following portions of our site compliant with a AA WCAG 2.0 rating.

These improvements apply to the following areas:

  • Login page and course listing
  • Lyryx Essential products course navigation
  • Lyryx Comprehensive products table of contents navigation
  • All Accounting homework questions
  • All Business Math homework questions

We are committed to improving accessibility to our products wherever possible and continue on this trajectory with plans to apply these standards to additional question banks. We are also looking at how best to improve accessibility of the online format of our OER textbooks.

Should you have any questions or comments regarding accessibility of Lyryx products, we would love to hear from you at info@lyryx.com.

San Diego, CA (January 10-13, 2018) The New Year gave way to Lyryx exhibiting and presenting at the Joint Mathematics Meetings – the largest mathematics meeting in the world!

Amidst more than 6,000 mathematicians, Lyryx spread the word about open educational resources (OER), namely open texts in Calculus, Linear Algebra and Introductory Statistics. Attendees were excited to hear that Lyryx is providing adaptable and accessible open texts and instructor supplements, but also a uniquely affordable online homework system to aid in student learning.

President and Founder, Claude Laflamme, was also on site to present “A Sustainable Model for OER” in the MAA Session on the Advancement of Open Educational Resources. This is part of efforts at Lyryx to promote OER in a sustainable and affordable manner, taking into account not only the costs and benefits to students, but also those of instructors and institutions interested in supporting OER.  There was plenty of interest from participants, in particular on how Lyryx continues to develop OER while producing accessible, affordable and pedagogically sound online homework.

Lyryx looks forward to attending JMM 2019, but for now, everyone is busy following up with all the mathematics instructors interested in exploring Lyryx with Open Texts.

Lyryx announces the release of “Linear Algebra with Applications” (W. Keith Nicholson) as their latest open educational resource (OER).

Calgary, AB (January 8, 2018) Today marks the official release of the latest open educational resource (OER) from Lyryx Learning. W. Keith Nicholson’s, Linear Algebra with Applications, a text published for many years by a traditional publisher, has now been released with an open license and is freely available to all.

OERs are educational materials that are open, freely accessible and can be fully used, shared, and adapted in the digital environment.

When asked why he opted to release his text under a Creative Commons license, Dr. Nicholson said, “The main goal of most publishers is profit, and the result has been a sales-driven business model as opposed to one driving student success. This results in frequent new editions of textbooks motivated largely to reduce the sale of used books rather than to update content quality. It also introduces copyright restrictions which stifle the creation and use of new pedagogical methods and materials. The overall result is high cost textbooks which may not meet the evolving educational needs of instructors and students.”

He added that with OER, “The cost to students is significantly lower, and open licenses return content control to instructors. Through editable file formats and open licenses, OER can be developed, maintained, reviewed, edited, and improved by a variety of contributors. Instructors can now respond to curriculum change by revising and reordering material to create content that meets the needs of their students.”

Claude Laflamme, Founder and CEO of Lyryx Learning, says, “This isn’t the first traditionally published text Lyryx has released as an OER and we know it won’t be the last. The need for accessible, affordable and adaptable resources is enduring and we are excited to contribute to the increased adoption of OER at post-secondary institutions in Canada by providing such resources.”
